Robots for redirection pages

Redirection pages are generally considered ugly; but uglier yet is a missing redirection. In the German version we have quite a few pages with suboptimal names which won't get fixed because after the move the clicked links would be redirections. It would be cool if there was a robot which would take care of this and update the links to pages which were turned into redirections; like this ("old name" being a page which was renamed to – and now redirects to – "new page"):

 • old name —> old name (or, maybe, simply new name)
 • new name —> new name
 • other name —> other name

The visible text should not be affected (with the possible exception of the simple link w/o adjustment of the visible text). Possibly there is such a robot already, because the reduction of redirections might be a quite common need. Such a robot could run once a week and take care of all new redirections only. Would this be possible? --Tobias 17:33, 3 June 2009 (UTC)

Not that I know of. Shane (talk) 02:03, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

Battlestar Pegasus Site

Hello, I dont know if this is even the correct place for this, but I remember that Joe ran the Battlestar Pegasus Fanfiction site, or had something to do with it, and I was wondering why it was down. When I click the link or type in the saved link to the page with my story on it, it shows as a blank white page with nothing on it.

If the site has been shut down, I would like to ask that I be able to retrieve my story and all relevant ship/character information from the different pages.

Again, I am very sorry if this is the wrong place, but I am looking for any information.

Thanks.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Mercer (talk • contribs).

Hey Mercer! Sorry for this, but I'll get the website back up and running over this weekend. At least, that's the plan anyway. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Battlestar Pegasus 23:47, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

Thanks very much. I thought it was just down for repairs or something, but I was quite worried that it had been shut down for some reason for good, which was quite distressing because I put so much into that story.

Thanks though, I look forward to it. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Mercer (talk • contribs).

The site is still down, I just thought I would let you know in case you tried to fix it.

I've been busy, so I wasn't able to really tackle it last weekend. I don't know if I'll make any head-way this weekend either, but I'll make the attempt. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Battlestar Pegasus 14:53, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
I will take a look at it also. Shane (talk) 00:49, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

Mercer, the site is now up. However, I do have plans to change the website over, since it never really lifted off as well as I'd hoped. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Battlestar Pegasus 18:29, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

Yes, thank you very much. What do you mean by change the website over?

IRC

Hey there! Despite the fact that, to this site, I'm relatively new, I've edited on Wikia for a while beforehand. Now, both Wikia and Wikipedia use something called "IRC", which stands for "Internet Relay Chat". More information can be found on the Wikipedia page for such a thing. Basically, it's a chatroom, that allows discussion over Wiki matters to be easier and quicker, a place for private conversations, and a place where relationships with other users can be strengthened. Admins and selected users could have something called an "op" status, which would allow vandals/trolls to be kicked/banned/muted and whatnot in the channel. Other users could have voice, to show that they're trusted and stop them from being muted. Freenode is a big and good server for this - this is the one Wikia/Wikipedia users. If you'd like me to set up a channel, please do respond. All channels have a # prefix, so this could be something like #battlestar-wiki or something. If you already have one, and I've merely missed it, I apologise. Cheers! :) --SILAS (talk)

We've discussed this before. Here's a link to that discussion. Any new ideas on this subject would, of course, be welcome. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Battlestar Pegasus 19:16, 10 September 2009 (UTC)

Alright, in response to the first point; you don't need to have everyone together; people can just join as and when they wish. If you don't want to make Wiki wide decisions in an IRC channel, which I can see where you're coming from, that's no real issue. It's not really a chatroom for random chatting, but can be used to find quick answers to coding issues, continuity issues, canon issues, etc. Also finding out if someone else has access to a source you'd like information from for an article. That's all I've really to say. :) --SILAS (talk)

Well, "quick answers" heavily depends on how many active users are on at the same time. We're not as big as Wikipedia, so we don't literally have hundreds of editors "on call" at the same time. It's just better to use talk pages for this sort of thing, since it's transparent and people can join in on the conversation, regardless of the time zone. I see where you're coming from as well, and we do have an IRC chat on the Battlestar Forum that we can always utilize from time to time, if needed. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Battlestar Pegasus 20:18, 10 September 2009 (UTC)

It doesn't really heavily depend; I'm in channels with often just two active users or so, and that works just as well. All it takes is one knowledgeable person to help. :) --SILAS (talk)

Mostly, we just communicate through GTalk. When I need something technical, I just send a message to Shane. Otherwise, 95% of the communications are all done via talk pages. As I said, we do have an IRC channel available via the Battlestar Forum, and it might be worth considering if used only for "quick answers" and not policy changes and items of that nature. -- Joe Beaudoin So say we all - Donate - Battlestar Pegasus 14:42, 11 September 2009 (UTC)
